Information Retrieval (IR)

Information Retrieval, on the other hand, is the process of retrieving relevant documents or pieces of information from a collection in response to a user query. IR systems typically index a large corpus of documents and use techniques such as term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF), vector space models, and relevance feedback to match user queries with relevant documents. Common applications of IR include search engines, question-answering systems, and document retrieval within enterprises.
